About the DMAR Deck 2024

Here is a bit more about Oxnard College Trio SSS, the charity that the DMAR deck is supporting.

DRAW ME A ROBOT

In case you don’t already know about us – welcome! Please do explore this website and our instagram. A good place to start would be here.

From the inception of this project which was the brainchild of @Drawmearobot @Nickjamesillustrator and @Braindeef , the collective Artists and Creatives from the DMAR community, known as The Robot Army came in full force! We put up the call for about 50 Artists (this number ended up growing significantly) and we were absolutely flooded by the response. It was incredible, humbling, and also not at all surprising to see so many artists volunteer their time and talent to make something amazing happen for the community. It is our collective honor and pleasure to have this project come to life and to be able to include so many of our wonderful Artists!

Oxnard Colleges’ TRIO SSS Program is very special to me. This is our second time raising funds and awareness for their incredible program. I asked them to share a little bit about their program and they sent me this information to share with all of you.

About TRIO SSS

We are a federally funded program serving primarily first generation (meaning their parents did not receive a bachelor’s degree), and low-income community college students that attend Oxnard College, as well as students with disabilities.

Our main objective is to help the 140 students we serve to obtain their desired degree, and ultimately transfer to a four-year institution and obtain a bachelor’s degree. With that, our goal is to help create career awareness to all that is possible to them, and to teach them financial literacy skills so that they can learn new tips and tricks to money management.

We do all of this by providing life changing experiences, field trips, workshops, individualized academic and career/transfer counseling, mentorship opportunities and more.

We do all of this on an extremely limited budget (less than $10,000 for direct student services for an entire year, serving 140 students); meaning these donations will help us to expand the world of possibilities we aim to introduce to our students. The donations by the Robot Army mean that our students are closer to achieving their dreams and seeing all that is possible to them.

Another goal of ours is to create a home for our students while they are on our campus. Being a community college student usually means our students wear multiple hats- many have to work full-time to support their families, many have dependents, many students have transportation struggles, and more. TRIO’s goal is to make our TRIO family’s time on campus feel valuable and that they are seen and valued for what they bring. We believe in the power in motivating, empowering, and advocating for our students.

One unique aspect of our program is that we are able to admit students who aren’t full time students. This means we can serve students who might only have the time to take one class instead of a full load (which is usually four or five classes). For us, this is extremely valuable, because we know if students were able to spend more time on their education, they would. Not many other programs are permitted to serve students unless they are full time. Our hope is that because we can serve students no matter how many units they are taking, they recognize that they can achieve a college degree.

We encourage people to check out our Instagram page so they can see for themselves that we truly embody a family.
